Contact with nature and physical activity are two of the most beneficial practices for our overall well-being. Taking a hiking route through Río Verde, in Granada, is a wonderful way to enjoy your free time, relieve stress, get some exercise, and explore breathtaking landscapes. Choose one of the Río Verde trails we recommend from Hammam and treat your senses to a revitalizing experience.

Río Verde is a river that flows through the province of Granada. Many also know it as the Guadix River, since this is the most prominent town along its path.

It originates in the municipality of Jérez del Marquesado, with waters coming from Sierra Nevada. The river runs for about 26 kilometers, with the highlight being the Río Verde gorge, located within the Sierra de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park.

This idyllic spot is located just outside the town of Otívar (80 km from the capital). It’s a popular destination for hikers and nature or adventure sports lovers, who come to discover its turquoise pools and challenge themselves on hanging bridges.

It’s one of the most stunning natural areas in the province of Granada, and there are several routes to Río Verde. How to get there? Here are a few options that will fascinate you:

This is a refreshing route suitable for the whole family. It begins at the sign marked “Cañón de Río Verde”. Cross the river, follow the marked trail, and walk over several wooden bridges.

Along the way, you’ll find pools to cool off in, viewpoints with stunning panoramic views, and even a small waterfall.

The final stretch is only for the brave, but it’s worth it to reach a large waterfall and an impressive natural pool. From there, you can turn back or, with caution, continue toward the upper part of the Funes gorge, enjoying a cave and a reservoir along the way.

This route begins at the “Collado de los Chortales”, on the Granada–Otívar–Almuñécar road. A concrete sign marks the starting point.

The trail goes up and down toward the Waterfall of the Petrified Trees, a beautiful cascade in a colorful setting next to an impressive cave.

Continue following the river, crossing it several times until reaching the Funes waterfalls — a must-see natural wonder.

You’ll then need to climb a fairly steep section to view the Barranco de las Choperas, at the end of which you’ll find a large crystal-clear pool. Enjoy a swim, then head back along the same trail.

Through the mid-mountain terrain of the Sierra de Almijara, you can follow a downhill route showcasing streams and canyons near the source of Río Verde, offering truly breathtaking views.

The path then continues toward Los Poyos del Pescado, a rocky junction leading to a spectacular display of nature including the Chorreras de los Palos and the Waterfall of the Petrified Trees.

About 3 kilometers past the town of Otívar, you’ll spot a small yellow house from the road. You’ll need to pass through a gate and pay €5 per person and per vehicle to start the hike.

Follow the (somewhat rough) path and posted signs to the designated parking area where you can leave your vehicle.

From there, begin your chosen Río Verde route. And enjoy the experience!

Contact with nature and physical activity are two of the most beneficial practices for our overall well-being.
