{"id":9461,"date":"2025-08-09T08:07:03","date_gmt":"2025-08-09T06:07:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/granada.hammamalandalus.com\/?p=9461"},"modified":"2025-08-10T08:20:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-10T06:20:09","slug":"the-history-of-the-court-of-the-lions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/granada.hammamalandalus.com\/en\/the-history-of-the-court-of-the-lions\/","title":{"rendered":"The history of the Court of the Lions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>T<\/strong><b>he Court of the Lions<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is the most famous spot in the Alhambra, named after the twelve lions that support the basin of the fountain located at the center of the courtyard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mohammed V commissioned the construction of the<\/span> <b>Court of the Lions.<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It has a rectangular floor plan and is surrounded by a gallery <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in the style of a Christian cloister,<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">supported by 123 white marble columns topped with several rings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many modifications have been made to the<\/span> <b>Court of the Lions.<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Initially, the center of the courtyard featured a lush garden, and the gallery floors were made of white marble.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The garden was removed to prevent moisture damage to the structure, an issue that had occurred in other periods.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>THE ORIGINS OF THE FOUNTAIN<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Regarding the origin of the fountain at the center of the<\/span> <b>Court of the Lions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, one of the most well-known sites in the Alhambra, the most widely accepted theory suggests it came from a palace belonging to the<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ibn Nagrella<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ibn Gabirol, one of the poets closest to this family, authored a poem in the 11th century describing the structure, including details such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There is a plentiful basin that resembles<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the sea of Solomon<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">yet does not rest upon bulls;<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">such is the addition of the lions,<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that stand upon the edge, as if<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the cubs were roaring for their prey\u2026<\/span><\/i>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This account has led historians to associate the fountain described in the poem with the one in the<\/span> <b>Court of the Lions.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The basin, made of white marble like the entire fountain, bears on its edge an inscription by Ibn Zamrak, dedicated to Muhammad V, the sultan who built the palace. This detail has sparked theories suggesting the fountain was either reconstructed from the original or newly added in the 14th century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This theory was supported by the Alhambra Trust after the fountain\u2019s restoration, when it was determined that the material used for the basin, fountain, and lions dates back to the 14th century, not the 11th.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2722 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/granada.hammamalandalus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/06\/patio-de-los-leones.jpg\" alt=\"court of the lions\" width=\"1024\" height=\"801\" srcset=\"https:\/\/granada.hammamalandalus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/06\/patio-de-los-leones.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/granada.hammamalandalus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/06\/patio-de-los-leones-300x235.jpg 300w, https:\/\/granada.hammamalandalus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/06\/patio-de-los-leones-768x601.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>THE ROLE OF WATER IN THE ALHAMBRA<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Water was considered the source of life in the Alhambra. It flowed throughout the complex and was the basis of its agriculture. The Nasrids used irrigation channels to distribute water, built aqueducts, and employed safety valves to manage excess water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The precious liquid was stored in cisterns, which also served as a filtration and settling system to ensure its cleanliness and purity. For this reason, the main channel did not have a storage well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A network of ceramic pipes distributed water throughout the Alhambra, delivering it to homes and public baths.
