Laguna de la Mosca: Hidden gem at the foot of Mulhacén in Sierra Nevada.
As the days pass, we gradually emerge from the situation that kept us confined in order to help combat an unknown virus. Now, we approach a new normal in which we can once again enjoy the many charming places that the city of Granada has to offer.
Also known as Laguna del Mulhacén, its most popular name is Laguna de la Mosca. Located at the foot of Mulhacén, it occupies a small basin near a cliff where water cascades down a waterfall. This lagoon is considered one of the most abundant and captivating spots in the entire Sierra Nevada Natural Park.
Among the most enchanting places Sierra Nevada offers, this lagoon stands out for two main reasons: the breathtaking beauty of its natural setting and its privileged location at the foot of the highest peak on the Iberian Peninsula.
In addition to being one of the most spectacular viewpoints, its surroundings allow visitors to admire it from different locations.
Collado del Ciervo, Puntal de La Caldera, Juego de Bolos, the summit of Mulhacén, and the summit of Alcazaba.
During snowy winters, Laguna de la Mosca is replenished by several small springs and snowfields in the area, which can last until mid-summer. Before the hottest weeks arrive, nearby basins often hold small sheets of water formed by melting snow, adding to the charm of the scenery.
The Sierra Nevada Natural Park
Spain is home to numerous natural parks where visitors can enjoy mountains, forests, and other natural treasures. However, the Sierra Nevada Natural Park stands out for both its altitude and the variety of peaks spread across its vast territory — more than 15 of them rising over 3,000 meters above sea level.
This natural park offers a perfect setting for mountain hiking. One of the most traditional activities is climbing Pico Veleta. The route includes minibuses and experienced local guides who share fascinating details about the landscape until you reach the summit, where panoramic views reveal much of the park — truly one of the most charming places in the country.
The hike to Laguna de la Caldera is another excellent option, especially for beginners. Although less demanding in terms of slope, it takes longer to complete than the climb to Pico Veleta.
Other well-known hiking routes — and equally enchanting destinations — include Vereda de la Estrella, La Ragua, and Morrón del Hornillo. Each offers a different level of difficulty, but all share a unique beauty that makes them unforgettable.
